Luxor is ancient Thebes, the capital of Egypt during its golden age.

It is considered the world’s largest open-air museum.

The city is divided by the Nile into two sides.

East Bank:

1. Karnak Temple:

The largest temple complex ever built in the world.

Built by more than 30 pharaohs over 2000 years.

Famous for the Great Hypostyle Hall with 134 massive columns and the Sacred Lake.

2. Luxor Temple:

Located in the center of the city. Built by Amenhotep III and Ramesses II.

Connected to Karnak by the 3km long Avenue of Sphinxes with 1050 sphinx statues.

It looks incredible at night when it’s illuminated.

3. Luxor Museum:

A modern museum on the Nile corniche with very high-quality pieces, including items from Tutankhamun’s tomb.

West Bank:

1. Valley of the Kings:

The royal cemetery with 63 tombs carved inside the mountain, including the tombs of Tutankhamun, Ramesses II, and Seti I. The colors and drawings are still vivid after 3500 years.

2. Temple of Queen Hatshepsut:

Built at Deir el-Bahari inside the mountain in 3 terraces. The architecture is very modern for its time. Hatshepsut was the most famous female pharaoh.

3. Colossi of Memnon:

Two giant statues of Amenhotep III at the entrance of the West Bank.

4. Medinet Habu Temple:

The temple of Ramesses III, its colors are better preserved than Karnak.

5.Valley of the Queens and Tombs of the Nobles.

90 tombs of pharaohs’ wives & kids. Most famous is Nefertari tomb (Ramesses II wife) – most beautiful & colorful tomb in Egypt.
Tombs of the Nobles = 400+ tombs of ministers & workers. Shows daily life – farming, fishing, parties – not just religion.
